(NOTE: This article first appeared in the March 2007 issue of Folio Magazine. Below is the full, un-edited version.)
Your readers are online. Your advertisers are spending money online or will be shortly. Online-only competitors are innovating their way into your market and gaining momentum. In most markets revenue is shifting from print to online and there are new, non-traditional revenue streams to go after.
You need to innovate and adapt rapidly, but your number one market position in print doesn’t automatically translate into a number one position online. To truly capture online...

Just had a great oppoprtunity to chat with my co-panelist here at the Pub Exec conference, Peter Meiers. Peter is Director of Alternative Media with Time, Inc. We got to talking about the impact that we feel technologies like ePaper and TFT will have on publishing. He and I both agree that once fully developed, these technologies will seriously begin to repace paper as a medium. They are high resolution, viewable in direct sunlight, and basically have the same visual properties of real paper. What does this mean to you right now? Personally, I believe that the technology is still 5-10 years away from...

I’m here in New York at the Publishing Exeutive conference. I’ll be speaking later today, but am writing a couple posts live from the show on my BlackBerry during the sessions. Right now I’m in the opening session listening to Jeff Cole from the USC Annenberg School (Center for the Digital Future), giving some insight on people’s use of the Internet. I thorougly enjoyed his presentation and meeting Jeff. Here are some of the key points, but you can get the full study at http://www.digitalcenter.org/

Michael Madej, a friend of mine at IndustryWeek, has a knack for finding the funny side of online media. He sent me these screenshots showing the sometimes humorous and ironic juxtaposition of content and online advertising. He assures me these are 100% authentic and not doctored up. Enjoy!

As I predicted in my post last December, online video continues to heat up as a key topic for publishers. The February issue of BtoB Media Business has a feature article on video, “Focus on Online Video: Publishers Get Ready for Surge” (although funny enough it’s the one article they left off of their web site from the February issue). Similarly, Publishing Executive also has a feature story on video in the February issue, “2007: The Online Video Era“. The story evens contains a photo of a really sharp looking emedia guy (at least my wife thinks so … thanks...

My wife and I just finished building a new house about 10 miles away from our old home with fantastic views of the Rockies. We’ve been planning this for almost three years and it’s hard to believe it’s finally done. I took last week off from work to pack the house, move, and unpack. We love the new place, but if I never see another box again in my life, it will be too soon!
During the entire week I went without broadband access to the Internet and didn’t use my laptop or desktop computer at all. To my surprise, I didn’t really miss them all that much....
